Instead these episodes focused on the nature of Shinji's depression and can best be described as a limited animation abstract art therapy session. In fact, given Future's focus on Steven's worsening psychological anguish, we're wondering if the ending of Steven Universe Future might take some cues from the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.Įvangelion's final two episodes, completed under severe time and budget constraints, notably abandoned most of the series' overarching sci-fi mysteries. After two near-perfect potential series finales, how is the series' actual ending going to measure up? Based on the direction the final season has gone so far, it feels like the series might finish in a much darker and weirder place.
